Cut Stringer Detail

Oak Staircase with hand carved thistle caps

What is a cut stringer stair?

The stringer is the housing on either side of a flight of stairs to which the treads and risers are fixed. A cut stringer has its upper edge cut to the profile of the treads and risers so to show their edge. A number of extra design features can be added to a cut stringer, such as scotia beading or capes.

This staircase features capes, the curved panels attached to the stringer at each tread, and scotia beading, the small curved piece of timber under the end of each tread.
