What is a cut stringer stair?

The stringer is the housing on either side of a flight of stairs to which the treads and risers are fixed. A cut stringer has its upper edge cut to the profile of the treads and risers so to show their edge. A number of extra design features can be added to a cut stringer, such as scotia beading or capes.
