What is a Newel Post?

The post/column used at the turning/change of direction of a stair to connect the handrails, baserails and stringers of adjacent flights. The term newel is also applied to the post or final baluster, at the top/bottom of the stair, which terminates a balustrade.

Newel posts come in a variety of styles, and it is not always necessary to have newel posts in your staircase. The design of a staircase is fully up to the customer.
