Open Riser Stairs

A walnut staircase with feature square bullnose platform

What is an open riser stair?

The 'rise' - The vertical space between adjacent treads - is open rather than closed, allowing daylight to shine through the staircase. The treads, which are visible from above and below, also offer the construction a modern and airy feel whilst also giving the perception of a larger space.

This increased transparency and sleek modern look compliments open floor plans which are becoming an increasingly popular feature of modern homes.

To conform with current building regulations it is necessary to incorporate a 'dummy riser'.

The White Oak staircase on the left is an example of a single scalloped riser. The Pine staircase below is an example of a double scalloped riser. These decorative risers lend a sense of character and uniqueness to a staircase.
